The Connected Service Business

What changes when sales, projects, service, accounting, and people stop operating like separate islands.

Customers experience one company. Internally, many service businesses operate as several. Sales has its pipeline. Projects has schedules and budgets. Service has calls and assets. Accounting has invoices and receivables. People operations has staffing and performance data. Each function may run reasonably well on its own while the overall customer and operating picture remains fragmented.

1 - Silos are usually created by software and responsibility, not bad intent

Departments specialize because specialization works. Sales should not manage job costing, and accounting should not dispatch technicians. The problem begins when specialization becomes information isolation. Each function optimizes its own queue without seeing the downstream consequence of a decision.

A connected business does not erase functional ownership. It gives each function enough shared context to understand how its work affects the larger operating chain.

2 - The customer lifecycle is one continuous workflow

From the customer's perspective, there is no clean boundary between sales, implementation, service, billing, and support. A promise made during sales becomes an operating expectation. A project experience changes the service relationship. A billing dispute can affect renewal. A service pattern can reveal a future capital opportunity.

When these events remain trapped in departmental systems, the company loses the ability to reason across the lifecycle.

  • Lead → opportunity → quote → customer
  • Customer → site → project or service need
  • Work → labor, materials, changes, completion
  • Completion → invoice → payment
